Ferda Taner Kaya grew up in the coastal town of Şile, perched on the Black Sea shores just beyond İstanbul, where the rhythms of daily life were inseparable from the kitchen. As a child, she spent her mornings watching fishing boats return to the harbour and her afternoons tucked inside her grandmother Hülya Hanım's stone house, where something extraordinary was always simmering on the wood-burning stove.
It was Hülya Hanım who first placed a wooden spoon in Ferda's hand and whispered the quiet wisdom that would shape her life: "Yemek sevgiyle yapılır, tarifiyle değil." — Food is made with love, not with a recipe. From hand-rolled mantı to slow-braised lamb with dried mulberries, every dish Ferda learned carried within it a story, a season, and the memory of a woman who cooked to nourish souls rather than simply fill plates.
Over decades of travel across Anatolia, the Aegean coast, and the mountainous villages of Karadeniz, Ferda came to understand that many of Turkey's most treasured culinary traditions were quietly disappearing — forgotten as younger generations moved to cities and turned to convenience. She began meticulously documenting endangered regional recipes: photographing methods, recording the voices of elderly home cooks, and transcribing techniques that existed nowhere in print. She has gathered over four hundred such recipes, each one a living piece of cultural heritage.
Today, FERDA TANER KAYA is her gift to the world — a freely shared library of authentic Turkish flavours, culinary history, and the human stories woven through every dish. Her mission is simple: to ensure that the food of her grandmother's kitchen, and the kitchens of a thousand grandmothers before her, is never lost to time.

Three commitments guide every decision made at FERDA TANER KAYA — from which recipes to document, to how they are shared with the world.
Every recipe on this site is carefully tested and cross-referenced against original regional sources — traditional cookbooks, village elders, and handwritten family records — before it ever reaches your screen. We never cut corners on flavor or history.
We deliberately seek out the dishes that risk being forgotten — the slow-cooked manti from forgotten mountain villages, the saffron-laced winter pilafs of Eastern Anatolia, the feast-day breads that only grandmothers still remember. If a dish is fading, we make it a priority.
Turkish culinary heritage belongs to everyone. Every recipe, every story, every technique on this site is completely free — no subscriptions, no paywalls, no premium tiers. It always has been and always will be. Good food is a human right, not a product.
"A recipe forgotten is a culture dimmed. A recipe remembered is a people made whole."— FERDA TANER KAYA
